Research Interests
Dr Rafał Bielas specializes in research on emulsions stabilized by solid particles, known as Pickering emulsions, which have wide applications in biomedical and materials technology. His main research interests include:
- Pickering Emulsion Stabilization: Research on various methods of emulsion stabilization, including ultrasonic homogenization and the application of a static electric field, which accelerates the process of forming a stable particle shell around the droplets.
- Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: The use of these nanoparticles for stabilizing emulsions, which under the influence of an alternating magnetic field generate heat. This opens up possibilities for applications in magnetic hyperthermia as well as in the production of microcapsules.
- Magnetic Liquid Marbles: Experimental research on the production of droplets stabilized by particles in air. These droplets, containing a magnetic liquid, can be manipulated using a magnetic field and utilized in advanced biomedical technologies.
- Experimental Ultrasonic and Magnetic Characterization: Studies on the properties of Pickering emulsions, which have applications in medicine and materials science.
Key Achievements
- Project Leader of PRELUDIUM 18: “Production of microcapsules based on Pickering emulsions using magnetic heating and their characterization” (NCN, project no.: 2019/35/N/ST5/00402). The project involved research on methods for producing capsules from Pickering emulsions and their potential application in biomedicine.
- Liquid Marbles Based on Magnetosomes: Development of a technology for producing magnetic droplets containing liquid, which when heated leave behind a hard shell. Research on the applications of these structures in biomedicine was conducted in collaboration with the Institute of Experimental Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice.
- Publications and International Collaboration: Dr Bielas is the author of numerous scientific publications concerning the applications of Pickering emulsions and magnetic liquid marbles in biomedicine. He has collaborated with international research teams, including the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
